Have you ever wondered which part of Malaysia is the wettest in Malaysia? With an average annual rainfall of about 4,000mm, Taiping, a town located in northern Perak, is known as a Rainy Heritage Town in Malaysia.

Taiping was previously known as the Larut Settlement, where its governor Long Jaafar discovered tin in the area with the help of his elephant named Larut. This was how the tin mining industry started in Taiping. Chinese settlers then started coming into the area with mining rights given to the Hakka Hai San and Cantonese Ghee Hin communities who fought bitterly against one another. The miners’ dispute, together with the royal succession dispute led the incoming of the first British Resident to come into office. When Datok Maharaja Lela assassinated the first Resident Mr J. W. W. Birch, Ipoh took over the role of the state capital of Perak from Taiping.
