The annual Terengganu International Squid Jigging Carnival aims to introduce as well as revive the old traditions that was once livelihoods for many along the coast of Terengganu between April and August each year. The fiesta will begin right after sunset and continues until when the sun is about to rise. The “revellers”, who are local fishermen and tourists, are usually rewarded with generous amounts of squid at the end of the carnival.

This event is sponsored by the state government of Terengganu and has successfully made jigging as a recreational activity loved by people of all ages. Jigging is the traditional way of catching squids without the need to use baits. This method only requires a tool named the “candat”. The candat or “jigger” is fashioned to appear like a bait and is made from either tin or plastic, which when dip in seawater, appears luminous to attract the squids. This year’s event will also witness foreign participation from across the region. Various activities have been lined up which include cooking demonstrations and competitions, exhibition stalls, food stalls and the likes all centered around squids.
