Sitting at the peak of Nakkerd Hill, the Big Buddha is a religious symbol and a famous tourist attraction in Phuket.
Officially known as “Phra Puttamingmongkol Akenakkiri Buddha”, the Big Buddha statue is 45 meters tall and made of white Burmese marble. Construction of the statue costs approximately THB30 million and was funded by public donation, reflecting the society’s deep respect for Buddhism.
Near the Big Buddha statue sits a smaller, 12-meter Buddha statue made of brass and is gold in colour. According to the locals, the white Big Buddha statue is devoted to His Majesty King Bhumibol, while the smaller golden Buddha statue is devoted to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.
At the base of Big Buddha, you will come across a hall which displays teaching in Buddhism, the history of the project, along with donation boxes. There are also marble tiles for purchase / donation, where you can write message of blessing or your name on it, which will later on be used for construction.
Big Buddha is also a famous viewpoint in Phuket, giving you an amazing bird’s eye view of the city. The best time to visit Big Buddha is perhaps in the evening, as the sunset here is equally stunning.

Phuket Big Buddha is located in Ao Chalong. From Chao Fa Road East, look for Soi Yodsane and follow the sign posts along the road. The drive up the hill is 6 km long.

Big Buddha is open daily from 8 am to 7.30 pm.
Entrance is free but donation is appreciated.
