Chicken Island, Krabi

Chicken Island Krabi

Chicken-shaped Rock on Chicken Island

Chicken Island or “Koh Kai” is a small beautiful offshore island near Ao Nang. Neighboring Poda Island, Tup Island, and Mor Island, these four islands form the Mu Koh Poda archipelago. Other names of Chicken Island include “Poda Nok Island” and “Hua Khawan Island”.

Chicken Island is known for the chicken-shaped rock formed on the island’s limestone mountains – this explains how the island got its name. From far, it looks like a chicken sitting on the surface of the sea. Another unique feature of the island is the “Talay Waek” or “divided sea” phenomenon. During low tide, a Y-shaped sandbar is seen linking Chicken Island to Tup Island and Mor Island, or literally divides the sea. You can walk on the sandbar to the two neighboring islands. With crystal clear water, Chicken Island is also a great place for scuba diving and snorkeling where you can get close to various tropical fish and marine life as well as interesting coral reefs.

How to get there:

Chicken Island is located approximately 8 km off the shore of Ao Nang, or 30-40 minutes travel time on long tail boat.

From Ao Nang, you can share a long tail boat which costs approximately THB300 return per person. However, you have to wait for a minimum of 8 passengers on the boat. If you prefer not to wait, you can always hire a long tail boat which costs around THB2,200 return and same price for island hopping.

Opening hour and entrance fee:

The island is part of the Haad Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park. Entrance fee is THB100 per person, but is usually covered by the tour agency if you visit the island on a tour. Opening hours are 8.30 am to 6.00 pm daily.
