Crystal clear water of Koh Phi Phi

Koh Phi Phi or “Phi Phi Islands” is located between Krabi Province and Phuket Province of Thailand. It is an archipelago of six islands, namely Koh Phi Phi Don, Koh Phi Phi Leh, Koh Mai Phai, Koh Yung, Bida Nok, and Bida Nai. Koh Phi Phi Don is the largest island among the six, while Koh Phi Phi Leh, the second largest island, is a national park.

The islands are known for their lovely beaches and bays. Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi Leh was made popular by the movie “The Beach”. Surrounded by enormous limestone cliffs, Maya Bay has beaches with soft white sand, clear sea water in turquoise hue, and colorful coral reefs. Activities on the islands include diving, snorkeling, kayaking, rock climbing, and cliff jumping.

Bida Nok and Bida Nai are popular diving spots with variety of marine life including black tip reef sharks, leopard sharks, moray eels, and turtles. Another diving spot is Shark Point / Long Beach, which is home to black tip reef sharks. Popular beaches on the islands include Hin Khao Beach, Lanti Beach, and Yao Beach, as well as Monkey Beach where you can see monkeys running around.

Tham Pya Nak or Viking Cave is famous for prehistoric paintings on the walls, featuring elephants and various types of vessels, including baroques, motorboats, sailing ships of different continents, and steamships. These paintings were believed to be drawn by pirates. The Koh Phi Phi Don Viewpoint, at 186 meters above sea level, gives you a grand panoramic view of the beautiful Phi Phi Islands and is undoubtedly the best spot to watch sunset. However the staircase leading up to the viewpoint is rather steep and you have to hike for 20-30 minutes. You may also visit the Tsunami Memorial Garden located on Koh Phi Phi Don to pay respect to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
