Phra Nang Cave, Krabi

Phra Nang Cave

Phra Nang Cave – a cave with great legends (credit: placesandfoods.com)

Phra Nang Cave is a limestone cave located on Railay Peninsula, a small peninsula between Ao Nang and Krabi. It is located to the north of East Railay Beach. The cave is also known as “Diamond Cave”.

As a limestone cave, Phra Nang Cave is full of stalagmites and stalactites, as well as limestone formations, most of which will glitter with the lights. The cave also showcases several “limestone waterfalls” – formations that look exactly like waterfall. Look for an enormous sparkling golden quartz “waterfall”, that is the must-see in the cave. Phra Nang Cave is not particularly big, it can be viewed in 15-20 minutes time.

However, the legends of the cave are said to be more compelling than its glittering limestone formations. Phra Nang Cave is believed to be the resting place of the spirit of an Indian princess, who had drowned in a shipwreck nearby the beach.

According to another legend, a daughter named “Nang” and a son named “Boon” from 2 grudging families were deeply in love. A marriage was arranged when the 2 families came to peace with each other, just to be deranged by the spirit of a sea serpent who sought Nang to marry its own son. The spirit managed to provoke a fight and brought the 2 families back to their grudging situation. These had disturbed and agitated a holy man living nearby, who turned those involved into caves and mountains in Railay. Nang’s spirit was captured in the cave, and Boon’s at the cliff above the cave. Today, Phra Nang is believed to be a symbol of fertility and has attracted visits by local couples trying to get babies or during pregnancies.
