Butterworth is the biggest town located on the mainland of the state of Penang. It is named after William John Butterworth, who was a Governor of the Straits Settlements during the mid-19th Century. The Malayan Railway has its Penang station in Butterworth, and visitors can also get to Penang Island via Ferry service or the Penang Bridge from Butterworth.
Butterworth is also the home of the Penang Bird Park, the largest bird park in Malaysia which houses more than 300 species from all over world. Another point of interest is the Temple of the “Ninth Emperor God”, which is a very beautiful temple built by over 50 expert craftsmen from China. There is also a major lion dance parade held in December every year. The Royal Malaysian Air Force has a station there, and it is common to see Military aircrafts drilling in Butterworth air space.
